Events in SAFe Agile
SAFe Agile events provide a synchronized "heartbeat" for the organization, ensuring alignment and constant feedback across all levels of the framework. In 2026, these events increasingly emphasize AI-driven flow and business agility.
1. Team-Level Events (Essential SAFe)
These events occur within a typical two-week iteration (sprint) to keep individual teams aligned.
Iteration Planning: The team defines what they can deliver in the upcoming iteration and builds the iteration backlog.
Daily Stand-up: A brief meeting where team members coordinate their daily work and surface impediments.
Iteration Review: A demo of the team's increment to the Product Owner and stakeholders to gather feedback.
Iteration Retrospective: The team reflects on their process to identify and commit to improvements.
2. Program-Level Events (Agile Release Train)
These events synchronize multiple teams (50–125 people) within a Program Increment (PI), typically lasting 8–12 weeks.
PI Planning: The most critical SAFe event; a two-day collaborative session where the entire ART aligns on a common mission and creates the PI plan.
ART Sync: A regular check-in for the train's leaders. It can be split into a Scrum of Scrums (for Scrum Masters/Team Coaches) and a PO Sync (for Product Owners/Management) to manage dependencies and progress.
System Demo: A demonstration of the integrated work from all teams on the train to provide an objective measure of progress.
Inspect & Adapt (I&A): A significant event held at the end of every PI, consisting of a full system demo, performance metrics review, and a structured problem-solving workshop.
3. Portfolio-Level Events
These events connect strategy to execution and ensure the organization is funding the right initiatives
Strategic Portfolio Review: Leadership meets to align the portfolio with changing business strategy and market conditions.
Portfolio Sync: A recurring event to gain visibility into the progress of all portfolio epics and address any cross-train issues.
Participatory Budgeting: A collaborative process where stakeholders decide how to allocate the total portfolio budget across various value streams.
4. Large Solution Events (Optional)
For massive, complex systems, these events coordinate multiple ARTs and suppliers.
Pre- and Post-PI Planning: Meetings held before and after the individual ART PI Planning sessions to ensure the entire Solution Train remains synchronized.
Solution Demo: A demonstration of the integrated progress of the entire Solution Train to customers and stakeholders.
